reikosena cold mineral spring that can still count as an onsen
Advanced

Reikosen is a cold mineral spring, below 25 degrees Celsius, usually heated before people bathe in it.

In Japan, an onsen doesn't have to be hot. Under the Hot Springs Act, water from underground counts as an onsen if it's at least 25 degrees Celsius or if it contains enough of certain minerals. Spring water below 25 degrees is called reikosen, or a cold mineral spring. Many baths heat this water, and they have to post a sign saying so.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Most visitors think an onsen means naturally hot water, but in Japan the legal definition is wider. Under the Hot Springs Act of 1948, water, steam, or gas that comes out of the ground is an onsen if it meets one of two conditions.

It is at least 25 degrees Celsius, or it contains enough of one of the minerals listed in the law, such as carbon dioxide or iron. So a spring can be cold and still be an onsen. Water that comes out below 25 degrees is called reikosen, a cold mineral spring. Most people don't want to soak in cold water, so these baths are usually heated.

Since 2005, onsen facilities have had to post a sign if they heat the water, add tap water, recirculate it, or use additives or disinfectant. If you read that sign, you'll learn a lot about the bath you're in. Personally, I like knowing that a cold spring can still be a real onsen.

冷鉱泉れいこうせんreikosena cold mineral spring that can still count as an onsen

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIf the water is heated, is it a fake onsen?

ANot legally. If the spring water has enough of the listed minerals, it's an onsen under the law, whatever its temperature. Heating just makes it comfortable to bathe in.

QHow can I tell if the water is heated?

ALook for the notice near the entrance or the changing room. Since 2005, facilities have had to show whether they heat the water, add water, recirculate it, or use additives, and why.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHAn onsen is always water that comes out of the ground naturally hot.

FACTUnder Japanese law, spring water below 25 degrees Celsius can still be an onsen if it contains enough of certain minerals, and many such baths are heated.

Phrases you can use

  • This spring comes out cold, so they heat it.
  • It still counts as an onsen because of the minerals.
  • The sign says the water is heated and recirculated.
  • Hot or cold, the minerals are what make it an onsen.

Background
