Oshima tsumugi is a fine silk kimono fabric from Amami Oshima, famous for its mud dyeing.
Oshima tsumugi is a high-end silk fabric for kimono, made mainly on Amami Oshima, an island south of Kyushu, and in Kagoshima. In the best-known type, the thread is dyed with liquid from a local tree and then worked into iron-rich mud, which turns it a soft black. The patterns are dyed into the threads before weaving, so making one roll takes many steps and a long time.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Oshima tsumugi is a silk fabric for kimono, made mainly on Amami Oshima, a subtropical island between Kyushu and Okinawa. What makes it special is how it is dyed. Craftspeople boil the bark and wood of a local tree, called techigi, and soak the silk thread in the liquid again and again. Then they take the thread into a muddy rice field and work it into the mud.
The iron in the mud reacts with the tannin from the tree, and the thread slowly turns a deep, soft black. The fine patterns are not printed on afterward. Each thread is dyed in sections before weaving, and the weaver has to line up those sections by hand as the cloth grows, so a single roll takes a long time to finish.
Because of this, Oshima tsumugi is very expensive, and fewer people wear kimono today, so production has fallen sharply. Still, many people love how light and smooth it feels. I think it is amazing that something so elegant starts in a mud field.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech

Background
