名前のつけ方
壱In one line一言で言うと
Namae no tsukekata, or naming a child, is limited to approved characters, and since 2025 the reading is regulated too.
弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する
A child's name may only use characters from the everyday-use list plus a separate list approved for names, together around three thousand characters. The reading was traditionally unrestricted, which produced unusual choices. From May 2025, readings are recorded in the family register and a newborn's reading must be one generally accepted for those characters.

Naming a child in Japan involves a rule that surprises people: the characters are restricted by law. You may use the everyday-use characters taught in school plus a separate list approved specifically for names, which together come to roughly three thousand. A character outside those lists will be rejected at the counter when the birth is registered.
What was never restricted was the reading. Japanese characters have multiple readings, so parents could assign almost any sound to any character, which produced a generation of names that other Japanese people genuinely cannot read, known informally as sparkly names. That changed in May 2025, when a revision of the family register law began recording readings officially.
For a newborn, the reading must now be one generally accepted for those characters, which rules out readings that contradict the characters' meaning or have no connection to them at all. People already registered were given a year to confirm or correct the reading on their own record.

使える漢字は法律で決まっている。読み方は自由だったが、2025年に変わった。
壱一言で言うとIn one line
名前のつけ方は、使える漢字が定められており、2025年からは読み方にも決まりができた、子の名づけのことです。
弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds
子の名に使えるのは常用漢字と人名用漢字に限られ、合わせておよそ三千字です。読み方は伝統的に制限がなく、そのため珍しい名づけが生まれました。2025年5月から戸籍に振り仮名が記載されるようになり、新生児の読みは、その漢字の読み方として一般に認められているものでなければならなくなりました。
参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy are the characters restricted at all?
ASo that a name can be written and read by ordinary administrative systems and by other people. The lists have been expanded many times, sometimes after parents challenged a rejection in court, and the current total is around three thousand.
そもそもどうして使える漢字が決まっているのですか。名前が、ふつうの行政の仕組みと、ほかの人によって書け、読めるようにするためです。一覧は何度も拡大されてきました。受理を断られた親が裁判で争ったことがきっかけになった例もあり、現在の合計はおよそ三千字です。
QWhat counts as an unacceptable reading now?
AOne that cannot be derived from the characters in any generally accepted way, such as a reading meaning the opposite of the characters, or one with no connection to them at all. The rule applies to newborns; existing names were not invalidated.
いまは、どんな読み方が認められないのですか。その漢字から一般に認められた形では導けない読みです。字の意味と反対の読みや、字とまったく関係のない読みが例に挙げられています。この決まりは新生児に適用されるもので、すでにある名前が無効になったわけではありません。

豆知識Background
子の名に使える文字は、戸籍法により常用漢字と人名用漢字、ひらがな、カタカナに限られます。人名用漢字は要望を受けて追加されてきました。2025年5月26日に施行された改正戸籍法により、戸籍に氏名の振り仮名が記載されることになり、出生届で初めて記載される子の読みは、その字の読み方として一般に認められているものであることが求められます。すでに戸籍のある人には、2026年5月25日までに届け出る期間が設けられました。
