Nambu tekki is cast ironware from Iwate, best known for heavy kettles and teapots.
Nambu tekki is cast ironware made in Iwate Prefecture, in Morioka and Oshu. Its most famous product is the tetsubin, a heavy kettle for boiling water, with a pebbled surface made by pressing dots into the sand mold. Iron kettles are said to make water taste rounder, and boiling in one adds a small amount of iron to the water.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Nambu tekki is cast ironware from Iwate Prefecture in northern Japan, and the craft goes back several centuries to the tea culture of the local lords. The classic object is the tetsubin, an iron kettle you put directly on a flame to boil water.
It is heavy, it holds heat, and the dimpled surface comes from pressing a pattern into the sand mold before casting. People say water boiled in one tastes rounder and sweeter. Part of that is real chemistry, because a small amount of iron does dissolve into the water, and part of it is probably the slow steady boil.
There is a practical point to know. A tetsubin for boiling water is bare iron inside and must be dried thoroughly after every use or it rusts. A teapot for brewing tea is usually enameled inside and is a different object, even though it looks similar.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QCan I brew tea directly in a tetsubin?
ANot in a bare iron one. Tea tannins react with the iron surface and both the kettle and the tea suffer. Use the tetsubin to boil water, and brew in a separate pot, or buy an enameled iron teapot which is made for brewing.
QHow do I stop it rusting?
AEmpty it while it is still hot so the residual heat dries the inside, leave the lid off, and never scrub the interior or store water in it overnight. A little surface rust is not dangerous, and boiling used tea leaves in the kettle helps seal it.
Phrases you can use
- Use it to boil water, not to brew tea.
- Empty it while it's still hot so it dries.
- The dots come from the sand mold.
- A little iron dissolves into the water.
Background
