Mochi is glutinous rice pounded into a dense, stretchy cake, eaten especially at New Year.

Mochi is made by steaming glutinous rice and pounding it until the grains disappear into a smooth, extremely sticky mass. It can be grilled, boiled in soup, or wrapped around sweet bean paste. It is central to New Year food, and because it is dense and sticky it causes choking deaths every January, mostly among elderly people.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Mochi is glutinous rice, steamed and then pounded until every grain has disappeared and what is left is a smooth, dense, enormously sticky mass. It is not sweet in itself. It is grilled until it puffs and eaten with soy sauce and seaweed, boiled in the New Year soup, or wrapped around sweet bean paste as a confection.

Pounding it traditionally takes two people with a wooden mallet and a mortar, one striking and one turning and wetting the mass between strokes, and that performance is still done at New Year events. There is a serious point that Japanese people take seriously too.

Mochi is dense and adhesive, it does not break down easily, and every January there are choking deaths, mainly among elderly people. Government agencies publish warnings each year: cut it small, chew thoroughly, drink something first, and do not let very young children or frail elderly people eat it unsupervised.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs the choking risk really that serious?

AYes. Japanese authorities issue warnings every December and January, and hospitals see cases each New Year. The advice is to cut it into small pieces, eat slowly and chew well, and to keep an eye on elderly relatives and small children while they eat it.

QWhat's the difference from dango?

AMochi is made by pounding steamed glutinous rice. Dango is made by mixing rice flour with water and steaming or boiling it. Mochi is stretchier and chewier, dango is firmer and comes in small balls, usually on a skewer.

Phrases you can use

  • Cut it small and chew it well.
  • It isn't sweet on its own.
  • Two people pound it with a mallet.
  • It's in the New Year soup.

Background
