Mino washi is made in the Mino area of Gifu Prefecture, along the clear Nagara River and its branches. It is thin, even and strong, and it has long been used for shoji screens. A strictly defined type called Hon-Minoshi, made only from kozo, or paper mulberry, was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Mino washi is traditional Japanese paper made in the Mino area of Gifu Prefecture. Papermaking there has a very long history. In the Shosoin, an old storehouse in Nara, a family register from the year 702 is still kept, and it is written on paper from Mino. Mino paper is famous for being thin but strong, with its fibers spread out evenly.

Papermakers scoop a mix of plant fibers and water with a wooden frame and rock it back and forth and from side to side, so the fibers cross each other. In the Edo period, it was valued as high-quality paper for shoji, the paper screens in Japanese houses, because it lets soft light through.

The finest type, Hon-Minoshi, uses only kozo, or paper mulberry, and is dried on wooden boards in the sun. In 2014, it was added to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list together with two other kinds of Japanese paper. Very few craftspeople make it today. When I hold a sheet up to the light and see the fibers, I want to use paper more carefully.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhat's the difference between Mino washi and Hon-Minoshi?

AMino washi is the general name for paper made in the Mino area. Hon-Minoshi is a strictly defined type made only from kozo, using traditional tools and methods. Only Hon-Minoshi is part of the UNESCO listing.

QHow can paper this thin be so strong?

AKozo fibers are long, and the papermaker rocks the frame so the fibers overlap in many directions. The result is a thin sheet that is very hard to tear.

Background
