AIt changes by rank: wrestlers below the top two divisions wear a plain cotton mawashi for both practice and matches, while sekitori, wrestlers in the top two divisions, switch to a heavier silk one for official bouts and add an elaborate embroidered version just for the ring-entering ceremony.

AGrabbing a solid one- or two-handed grip on the opponent's mawashi lets a wrestler control their balance, drive them backward out of the ring, or execute one of several dozen named throwing techniques, so in belt-fighting bouts the result often comes down to who gets the better grip.
