Maekake is a thick cotton work apron, often navy, tied around the waist.

Maekake is a traditional work apron that covers you from the waist down. The classic kind is made of thick cotton canvas, dyed navy, with the shop's name printed in big white letters. Sake brewers, rice shops and liquor stores wore them to protect their clothes and their legs while carrying heavy loads. Today they are also popular souvenirs and are used in cafes and restaurants.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

If you visit an old sake brewery or a liquor store in Japan, you may see staff wearing a thick navy apron tied around the waist. This is a maekake. Unlike an apron that hangs from the neck, it only covers you from the waist down, and it is tied with a long cord that goes around your body and is knotted in front.

The best-known type is made of heavy cotton canvas. It is strong enough to protect your legs when you carry a sack of rice or a crate of bottles on your hip. Many shops printed their name or logo on it in large white letters, so the apron also worked like a walking sign.

Shops are said to have started dyeing their names on aprons in the Meiji era, from the late 1800s. Today, a small number of workshops still make them, including some in Toyohashi in Aichi. I think a maekake is a nice example of Japanese design that is simple, useful and good-looking at the same time.

前掛けまえかけmaekakea sturdy Japanese work apron tied around the waist

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Background
