kyoshujodriving school, the required path to a license
Standard

Kyoshujo, a licensed driving school, is where most people in Japan take weeks of lessons before getting a license.

Unlike countries where a learner can study alone and take a test, Japan's system runs almost entirely through licensed driving schools. Students complete a set number of classroom and practical hours, pass an in-house test to get a temporary permit, then more hours of on-road practice before a final graduation exam. The whole process commonly takes a few weeks and costs several thousand dollars, less if done through a short residential course away from home.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Getting a driver's license in Japan almost always starts at a kyoshujo, a licensed driving school, because passing the government test directly without one is legally possible but practically very rare. For a standard automatic license, students complete about 26 classroom periods and 31 driving periods, split into two stages: closed-course practice first, then a permit test, then real road driving. Only two driving lessons are allowed per day in the early stage, which is part of why the whole course takes several weeks even for someone studying full time.

At the end there's a graduation exam at the school itself, and passing that lets a student skip the practical test at the license center and go straight to the written test. Costs run into the thousands of dollars, which is steep, but a popular workaround is a residential course in a rural area, where students live at the school for about two weeks and finish faster than commuting to a city school evening by evening.

自動車教習所じどうしゃきょうしゅうじょkyoshujodriving school, the required path to a license

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QCan't I just take the driving test without going to a school?

ATechnically yes, it's called ippatsu shiken, a one-shot test at the license center, but the practical test is demanding and the pass rate for first-timers is low, so almost everyone goes through a school instead.

QWhy does it take so many weeks?

ARules limit how many driving lessons a student can take per day, especially early on, so the hours are spread out over a set number of weeks rather than compressed into a few intensive days.

QWhat is a 'residential' driving school?

AA rural driving school where students stay in a dormitory and take lessons every day with no daily commute, finishing the whole course in around two weeks, often for less money than a city school.

Phrases you can use

  • I'm attending a driving school right now.
  • I passed the graduation exam.
  • How many lessons are left?
  • I'm doing the residential course.
  • When is your permit test?

Background
