Standard

Kumite is karate sparring, where two people face each other and exchange punches and kicks.

Kumite is the sparring side of karate. Two people face each other and use punches, kicks and strikes, either as practice or in a match. Karate has two main parts: kata, a set routine you perform alone, and kumite, where you deal with a real opponent. In most sport karate, you stop your blows just short of the target and win points for clean, controlled technique.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

When people hear the word karate, many picture someone breaking boards or practicing moves alone. That second part is called kata. The other half of karate is kumite, which means working with a partner. Kumite can be very simple, like one person attacking in a fixed way while the other blocks, or it can be free sparring, where both people move and attack as they like.

Karate first appeared at the Olympics at the Tokyo 2020 Games, with two kinds of events, kata and kumite. In that style of competition, fighters usually stop their punches and kicks just before they hit hard, and judges give points for speed, control and good form.

Not every style works this way. Some schools practice full-contact kumite, where real hits are allowed and a knockdown can decide the match. What all of them share is respect: you bow to your partner before and after. To me, kumite is where you find out whether your kata really works.

組手くみてkumitesparring with a partner in karate

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QDon't you get hurt if you never hit each other?

AIn point-style kumite, you are supposed to control your blows, but accidents still happen, so fighters wear gloves and other protection. Full-contact styles do allow real hits, so the risk is higher there.

QIs it the same word as kumite in judo?

AThe sound is the same, but in judo kumite usually means how you grip your opponent's jacket. In karate, it means sparring with a partner.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHKarate competitions are all about knocking the other person out.

FACTIn the most common sport style, you score points with controlled techniques that stop short of a hard hit. Full-contact matches exist, but they are one style among many.

Phrases you can use

  • Karate has two parts: kata and kumite.
  • In kumite, you practice with a real partner.
  • You stop the punch just before it lands.
  • Some styles allow full contact, but ours doesn't.
  • Bow to your partner before you start.

Background
