言霊

ことば・こころ Concepts / 神道・神社 Shinto応用 Advanced
神社で言葉を大切に祈りを唱える参拝者

壱In one line一言で言うと

Kotodama is the old idea that spoken words have power and can bring about what they name.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

Kotodama literally means the spirit of words. It is the belief that saying something aloud gives it force, so unlucky words are avoided at weddings and funerals and lucky ones are said on purpose. Few people would call this a religious belief today, but it explains a lot of everyday Japanese care about what is said out loud.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Kotodama is written with the characters for word and for spirit, and it means the power a spoken word is felt to carry. The idea is old; a poem in the eighth-century Man'yoshu calls Japan a land where the spirit of words brings good fortune.

Its descendants turn up constantly. At a wedding you avoid words like cut, end and return, because they suggest the marriage ending, and speeches are rewritten to keep them out. Before an exam, people try not to say slip or fall in front of the candidate.

Most Japanese would never claim that words have spirits, yet many follow the avoidances, in the same way that people elsewhere will not say good luck to an actor before a performance.

言霊ことだまkotodamathe belief that spoken words carry power

口に出したことは起きる。だから縁起の悪い言葉を避ける。

壱一言で言うとIn one line

言霊とは、口に出した言葉には力があり、言ったとおりのことを招くという古い考えです。

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

言霊は文字どおりには言葉の霊を意味します。声に出すことでその内容に力が宿るという考えで、結婚式や葬儀では縁起の悪い言葉を避け、めでたい言葉はあえて口にします。今これを信仰と呼ぶ人はほとんどいませんが、日本人が口に出す言葉に気を配る理由の多くはここにあります。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs this an actual religion?

ANo. It is a habit of mind rather than a doctrine, though it overlaps with Shinto ideas about the power of speech. Nobody is taught it directly; you pick it up from being corrected.

これは宗教なのですか。信仰ではありません。教義ではなく、ものの考え方の癖です。言葉の力についての神道の考えとは重なります。教わるものではなく、注意されながら身につけるものです。

QSo what should I avoid saying?

AAt a wedding, anything about cutting, ending, separating or returning. On a hospital visit, the numbers four and nine and any talk of things getting worse. Before a launch or an exam, words about failing.

では、何を言わないほうがよいのですか。結婚式では、切る、終わる、別れる、帰るに関わる語です。お見舞いでは、四と九、そして悪くなるという話題を避けます。発表や試験の前には、失敗に関わる語を使いません。

QDoes it work in the other direction too?

AYes. Saying a goal aloud is thought to help fix it, and some people explain writing wishes on an ema, a wooden plaque at a shrine, or a team shouting its target before a match in the same way.

よい言葉についても同じことが言えますか。働きます。目標は口に出すと定まると考えられており、絵馬に願いを書くことや、試合の前に選手が声をそろえて目標を叫ぶことを、同じ発想で説明する人もいます。

そのまま使えるフレーズPhrases you can use

  • Let us not say that out loud.口に出さないでおきましょう。
  • That word is avoided at weddings.その言葉は結婚式では避けます。
  • Words have a way of coming true.言葉は現実になることがあります。
  • Say it and you will bring it on.言うと本当になってしまいますよ。
  • Choose your words carefully today.今日は言葉を選んでください。

豆知識Background
