Kata are fixed sequences of moves, practiced alone or with a cooperating partner, not against resistance.
Kata is a set, memorized sequence of techniques, stances and movements practiced repeatedly, either alone against an imaginary opponent or with a partner following a prearranged script rather than freely resisting. Karate, judo, kendo and other martial arts each have their own catalog of kata, ranging from beginner forms to advanced ones layered with subtle timing and breathing. It's treated as separate training from sparring, aimed less at winning a real exchange and more at drilling correct form, balance and precision until they become automatic.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Kata looks, at first glance, like a martial art performed against nobody, and in a sense it is: a fixed sequence of strikes, blocks, throws or cuts, memorized and repeated exactly the same way every time, often with no real opponent in front of the practitioner at all. That's the point rather than a shortcoming. Sparring tests whether a technique works under resistance, but it also lets bad habits and shortcuts creep in under pressure; kata strips the resistance away so a student can drill correct stance, timing, breathing and transitions with total precision, without an opponent's unpredictability to blame for a sloppy movement.
Different arts treat kata very differently: karate has dozens of named forms passed down through different schools, judo has kata specifically for techniques too dangerous to practice at full speed in randori, and kendo pairs students together for kata using wooden swords in a scripted attack-and-response sequence. Competitions exist purely for kata performance, judged on precision, power and presence rather than on defeating an opponent, treating the form itself as worth mastering on its own terms.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIf there's no opponent, how does kata actually improve fighting ability?
AIt builds correct stance, balance, timing and breathing so precisely that they become automatic, which is meant to show up in sparring and real technique even though kata itself is performed without resistance.
QIs kata the same as choreography, like a dance?
AIt's related in that both are memorized and repeated exactly, but kata is built from techniques meant to work in an actual encounter, and advanced practitioners are expected to understand the combat meaning, called bunkai in karate, behind each movement.
QDo all martial arts have kata, or is it mainly a karate thing?
AMost traditional Japanese martial arts have some form of kata, including judo, kendo, aikido and iaido, though the specific forms, their number and how central they are to grading vary a lot by art and school.

Background
