壱In one line一言で言うと

Kasa is a traditional Japanese hat, usually wide and woven, worn against sun and rain.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

Kasa is a traditional Japanese hat with a wide brim that keeps off sun and rain. Some are cone-shaped and woven from sedge, a grass-like plant, and were worn by farmers working in rice fields. Others are deep enough to hide the face, like the ones worn by traveling monks. The word sounds the same as kasa for umbrella, but the two are written with different kanji.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

In old Japanese paintings and samurai dramas, you often see travelers wearing wide, flat hats. These are called kasa. The word sounds exactly like kasa, meaning umbrella, and that makes sense, because both protect you from sun and rain. The difference is that one is held in the hand and the other is worn on the head. There are many kinds.

Sugegasa is a cone-shaped hat woven from sedge, and it was worn by farmers planting rice. Ajirogasa, woven from thin strips of bamboo, is worn by Buddhist monks when they walk around collecting offerings. Pilgrims on the 88-temple route in Shikoku wear a sedge hat with words meaning that the monk Kukai walks with them.

Some festival dancers also wear kasa that hide part of the face. In English, these hats are sometimes called "rice hats" or "Asian conical hats," but in Japan the shape and material tell you who is wearing it. I think the kasa is a great example of simple, practical design.

笠かさkasaa traditional Japanese hat, often woven from sedge or bamboo

かぶる「笠」とさす「傘」。読みは同じ、昔は同じ道具の仲間。

壱一言で言うとIn one line

笠とは、日よけや雨よけにかぶる日本の伝統的な帽子で、多くは幅が広く、編んで作られています。

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

笠は、つばが広く、日差しや雨を防ぐ日本の伝統的なかぶりものです。円すい形でスゲという草で編んだものは、田んぼで働く農家の人がかぶってきました。托鉢の僧がかぶるもののように、顔が隠れるほど深いものもあります。この言葉は、雨の日にさす「傘」と同じ音ですが、漢字は違います。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QAre kasa and umbrellas really the same word?

AThey're pronounced the same, and they're closely related. The kanji are different, though: one is for the hat you wear, and the other is for the umbrella you hold. Some people think the umbrella got its name from the hat, but that's just one theory.

笠と傘は、本当に同じ言葉なのですか。発音は同じで、とても近い関係にあります。ただ漢字は違い、一方はかぶる笠、もう一方は手に持つ傘です。傘は笠から名前をもらったと考える人もいますが、それは説の一つです。

QDo people still wear them?

ANot in everyday life, but you'll still see them. Monks, pilgrims, festival dancers, and some farmers wear them, and they appear in samurai dramas all the time. Sedge hats are still handmade in a few places, such as Takaoka in Toyama.

今でもかぶる人はいますか。ふだんの暮らしではかぶりませんが、今でも見かけます。僧やお遍路さん、祭りの踊り手、一部の農家の人がかぶりますし、時代劇にはいつも出てきます。菅笠は今も、富山県高岡市などで手作りされています。

誤解されやすいA common misunderstanding

MYTHThe cone-shaped "rice hat" is mainly a Chinese or Vietnamese thing, not Japanese.円すい形の「ライスハット」は中国やベトナムのもので、日本のものではない。

FACTSimilar hats are used across Asia, and Japan has its own long tradition of them. Japan's sedge hats are still made by hand, and the skill is protected as a cultural property.似た帽子はアジアの各地で使われており、日本にも独自の長い伝統があります。日本の菅笠は今も手作りされ、その技術は文化財として守られています。

豆知識Background
