kamimukaesaithe night ritual at Izumo that welcomes gods from all over Japan
Advanced

Kamimukaesai is a night ritual on Izumo's coast that welcomes gods arriving from across Japan.

Kamimukaesai is held at Izumo, in Shimane, on the evening of the 10th day of the tenth month of the old lunar calendar, which now falls in November or December. Priests light bonfires on Inasa Beach to welcome the gods, who are said to arrive from the sea. They are then led about a kilometer to Izumo Taisha. This begins a week when the gods are believed to meet and decide people's connections.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

In Japanese tradition, the tenth month of the old calendar is called kannazuki, which can be read as the month without gods. The story behind the name is that gods from all over the country leave their shrines and travel to Izumo, in Shimane Prefecture. So in Izumo, the same month is called kamiarizuki, the month with gods.

Kamimukaesai is the ritual that welcomes them. On the evening of the 10th day of that month, which now falls in November or December, priests light bonfires on Inasa Beach and wait for the gods, who are said to come in from the sea. After the ceremony, the priests carry the gods in a procession to Izumo Taisha, about a kilometer away.

During the week that follows, the gods are believed to hold a meeting about people's connections for the coming year, including marriages. Local people traditionally try to stay quiet so they will not disturb the meeting. Standing on the dark beach with the fire and the sound of the waves, I can understand why this story has lasted so long.

神迎祭かみむかえさいkamimukaesaithe night ritual at Izumo that welcomes gods from all over Japan

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhy does the date change every year?

ABecause it follows the old lunar calendar, not the calendar we use today. The 10th day of the tenth lunar month can land anywhere from early November to December, so you need to check the date each year.

QCan tourists watch the ceremony?

AYes, many visitors gather on the beach, and some join the procession to the shrine. It is a religious ritual, though, so visitors are expected to stay quiet and respectful.

Background
