jika-tabisplit-toe work shoes with rubber soles
Standard

Jika-tabi are split-toe work shoes with rubber soles, worn by builders, farmers, and people at festivals.

Jika-tabi look like tabi, or Japanese split-toe socks, but they have thick rubber soles, so you can wear them outside. The big toe is separate from the other toes, and the back closes with small metal hooks. Construction workers, gardeners, and farmers wear them because they grip well and let you feel the ground. You also see them at festivals, on people carrying portable shrines.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Jika-tabi are Japanese work shoes with a split toe. They look like tabi, the split-toe socks worn with kimono, but they have thick rubber soles, so you can walk, climb, and work in them. Rubber-soled jika-tabi spread in the 1920s, after a tabi maker in Kurume, in Fukuoka Prefecture, started selling them.

The same family business later began making car tires and grew into Bridgestone. Today, you see jika-tabi on scaffolding workers, gardeners, farmers, and people carrying portable shrines at festivals.

They grip well and let you feel the ground under your feet, which matters when you work high up. Some visitors also buy them as souvenirs. I like that such a simple design is still part of everyday work in Japan.

地下足袋じかたびjika-tabisplit-toe work shoes with rubber soles

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QAre they comfortable to walk in?

AOnce you get used to them, yes. The soles are thin compared with sneakers, so you feel every stone, which some people like and some don't. Get the size right, because they're meant to fit tightly.

QWhy are the toes split?

AIt comes from tabi. With the big toe separate, your foot can grip, which helps on ladders, roofs, and uneven ground.

QWhat does "jika" mean?

AIt's usually explained as "directly," because you walk straight on the ground in them, with no other shoes. The kanji seem to have been chosen for their sound, and there are several theories about the name.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHJika-tabi are ninja shoes.

FACTThey're work shoes. Rubber-soled jika-tabi spread in the 1920s, long after the age of the samurai.

Phrases you can use

  • These are work shoes, not socks.
  • The hooks at the back keep them tight around your ankle.
  • Builders wear them because they grip well.
  • Pick a size that fits snugly.
  • You'll see them at festivals, too.

Background
