生きがい

ikigaiwhat makes life worth living
ことば・こころ Concepts / 仕事・会社 Work Culture標準 Standard
日々の生きがいとして陶芸に励む職人

壱In one line一言で言うと

Ikigai is what makes your life feel worth living, and it is usually something small and ordinary.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

Ikigai combines iki, living, and gai, worth. It is what gives your days a reason: a grandchild, a garden, a craft, morning walks, work you care about. Abroad it is often presented as a four-circle diagram about finding your perfect career. That diagram was not made in Japan and does not reflect how the word is used here.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Ikigai is made of two parts: iki, meaning living, and gai, meaning worth or value. It refers to whatever makes your life feel worth getting up for. If you asked Japanese people what their ikigai is, most would not say a career. They would say their grandchildren, or their vegetable garden, or the choir they sing in, or the shop they have run for thirty years.

Japanese surveys asking this question tend to find family and everyday activities ranked above work. Now the correction that matters. Outside Japan, ikigai is usually shown as a diagram of four overlapping circles: what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for.

That diagram did not come from Japan. It was adapted from a Western model about purpose, and the Japanese word was attached to it later. The real word is smaller, older and less ambitious, and I think better for it.

生きがいいきがいikigaiwhat makes life worth living

海外で有名になった図(4つの円)は、日本発ではない。本来はもっと小さな話。

壱一言で言うとIn one line

生きがいとは、生きる張り合いになるもののことで、たいていは小さく日常的なものです。

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

生きがいは「生き」と「甲斐」から成り、生きる価値・張り合いを意味します。日々に理由を与えるもののことです。孫、庭、手仕事、朝の散歩、大切に思っている仕事。海外では、理想の職業を見つけるための四つの円の図として紹介されがちです。あの図は日本で作られたものではなく、この語の実際の使われ方を映していません。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QSo the four-circle diagram is wrong?

AIt is not a Japanese framework. It is a Western model about purpose that had the Japanese word attached to it. As a career tool it may be useful; as an explanation of the Japanese word it is misleading.

では四つの円の図は間違いなのですか。日本の枠組みではありません。目的についての西洋の図に、日本語の語が貼られたものです。キャリアの道具としては役に立つかもしれませんが、日本語の説明としては誤解を招きます。

QDoes it have to be your job?

ANo, and for most people it is not. Japanese usage covers hobbies, relationships, routines and small daily pleasures, and does not require that anything pay you.

仕事でなければいけませんか。必要ありません。多くの人にとって仕事ではありません。日本語の用法は趣味、人間関係、日課、日々の小さな楽しみを含み、報酬を伴う必要はありません。

QWhy did it become famous abroad?

ALargely through books about longevity in Okinawa published in the 2000s and 2010s, which linked having a reason to get up in the morning with living longer. The diagram spread separately, through the internet.

どうして海外で有名になったのですか。2000年代から2010年代に出版された沖縄の長寿についての本が大きく、朝起きる理由があることと長生きを結びつけて紹介しました。図のほうはそれとは別に、ネットを通じて広まりました。

誤解されやすいA common misunderstanding

MYTHIkigai is a Japanese method for finding the perfect job, shown as four overlapping circles.生きがいは四つの円で理想の仕事を見つける日本の方法だと思われがちです。

FACTThe diagram is not Japanese in origin. In Japanese, ikigai usually refers to family, hobbies or daily routines, and surveys consistently place work below those.あの図は日本由来ではありません。日本語の生きがいは家族・趣味・日課を指すことが多く、調査でも仕事はそれらより下に来ます。

そのまま使えるフレーズPhrases you can use

  • For most people it isn't their job.多くの人にとっては、仕事ではありません。
  • My grandmother's ikigai is her garden.祖母の生きがいは庭いじりです。
  • The four-circle diagram isn't from Japan.あの四つの円の図は、日本のものではありません。
  • It's a smaller, more everyday word than people think.思われているより、小さく日常的な言葉です。

豆知識Background
