壱In one line一言で言うと

Horenso is the rule that you report, keep people informed, and consult before acting.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

Horenso is a three-part rule taught to many new employees in Japan: hokoku, report what you have done; renraku, keep others informed; and sodan, consult before deciding. The word is a pun, since it sounds exactly like the word for spinach. It explains why Japanese colleagues send far more updates than you may expect.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

If you work with a Japanese team, you will run into horenso within the first week. It is a three-part principle that is a staple of new employee training. Hokoku means report: tell your superior what you have done, including when it is finished. Renraku means contact: keep the people affected informed, even about small changes.

Sodan means consult: talk to someone before you decide, particularly if something has gone wrong. The word itself is a pun, because the three syllables together sound exactly like the Japanese word for spinach, which is how everyone remembers it.

To someone from a workplace that values autonomy, this can feel like excessive checking in. The logic behind it is that a problem shared early is small, and a problem discovered late belongs to the whole team. If you want one practical tip for working in Japan, it is to report more often than feels necessary.

報連相ほうれんそうhorensoreport, contact, consult

「ほうれん草」と同じ音の、日本の会社の基本動作。新人研修の定番。

壱一言で言うとIn one line

報連相とは、報告し、連絡し、相談してから動く、という日本の職場の基本です。

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

報連相は、日本の多くの新入社員が教わる三つの原則です。報告(やったことを伝える)、連絡(情報を共有する)、相談(決める前に相談する)。この語は野菜のほうれん草と同じ音になる語呂合わせです。日本の同僚が想像以上にこまめに連絡をくれる理由が、ここにあります。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIsn't this just micromanagement?

AIt can become that. The intent is shared awareness rather than control, but in a badly run team it turns into constant reporting for its own sake, and Japanese workers complain about that too.

これは細かすぎる管理ではありませんか。そうなることもあります。意図は管理ではなく情報の共有ですが、うまくいっていないチームでは報告のための報告になります。それは日本人自身も不満に思っています。

QWhat do I do if I made a mistake?

AReport it immediately and in person if possible. In Japanese workplaces, delaying bad news is often treated as a more serious failure than the mistake itself.

自分が間違いをしたときは、どうすればいいですか。すぐに、できれば直接報告してください。日本の職場では、悪い知らせを遅らせることのほうが、失敗そのものより重い過失とされることが多いです。

QWhere does the word come from?

AIt was popularized in the 1980s by a Japanese company president who wrote about it, and the spinach pun made it stick. It is now standard in corporate training materials.

この言葉はどこから来たのですか。1980年代に、ある日本企業の経営者が著書で広めたものとされ、ほうれん草の語呂合わせで定着しました。今では企業研修の定番の用語です。

そのまま使えるフレーズPhrases you can use

  • Let me report on where we are.進捗をご報告します。
  • I'd like to consult you about something.ご相談したいことがあります。
  • Sorry to send so many updates.たびたびのご連絡ですみません。
  • Tell them right away if something goes wrong.何かあったら、すぐ伝えてください。
  • The word sounds exactly like the word for spinach.ほうれん草と同じ音になるんです。

豆知識Background
