Shops open the year with sales and sealed lucky bags whose contents are worth more than the price.

The first trading day of the year brings hatsuuri, the New Year sale, and with it fukubukuro, sealed bags sold at a fixed price containing goods worth more. Queues form before opening. Some retailers now show the contents in advance or sell them online, which has taken away some of the gamble.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

The New Year sale, hatsuuri, is the retail counterpart of the holiday. Department stores and shopping centers open on January 1st or 2nd, and the draw is the fukubukuro, the lucky bag: a sealed bag at a fixed price, commonly five or ten thousand yen, holding goods worth noticeably more.

You do not know what is inside, which is the point. Clothing shops pack a season's items; coffee chains pack beans and a mug; some famous bags contain things like a trip or a car and exist mainly for publicity. People queue from early morning, and popular bags sell out within minutes of opening. Two changes are worth noting.

Many retailers now publish the contents in advance, because customers complained about unwanted items, and online sales from late December have reduced the queues. The custom itself is over a century old, and its origin is usually traced to the big kimono merchants that later became department stores, though accounts differ.

初売りと福袋はつうりとふくぶくろhatsuuri and fukubukuroNew Year sales and lucky bags

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QAre lucky bags actually good value?

AUsually yes in total value, but the fit depends on whether you want what is inside. Bags with published contents remove that risk, and clothing bags in particular can include sizes that do not suit you.

QWhen do shops open?

AMany department stores open on January 2nd, and some on the 1st. Small independent shops often stay shut until the 4th or later, so the first days of January are quieter than visitors expect.

QDo I need to queue?

AOnly for the bags people talk about. For most stores there is no need to arrive very early, and many chains now hand out numbered tickets rather than letting a crowd build.

Phrases you can use

  • The New Year sale starts on the second.
  • What's in the lucky bag?
  • The contents are listed in advance.
  • They sold out in ten minutes.
  • Numbered tickets are given out from nine.

Background
