般若心経

Hannya shingyothe Heart Sutra, a short Buddhist scripture about emptiness and wisdom
仏教・お寺 Buddhism標準 Standard

壱In one line一言で言うと

Hannya shingyo, or the Heart Sutra, is a very short Buddhist scripture often chanted at Japanese temples.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

The Heart Sutra is one of the shortest Buddhist scriptures. The version read in Japan is a Chinese translation of fewer than 300 characters. Its main idea is emptiness: nothing exists completely on its own. Many schools of Japanese Buddhism chant it at funerals and memorial services, and people also copy it by hand as a practice called shakyo.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

If you visit a temple in Japan, there is a good chance you will hear the Heart Sutra, or Hannya shingyo. It is one of the shortest Buddhist scriptures. The version read in Japan is a Chinese translation with fewer than three hundred characters, so many people can recite it from memory.

The text is about emptiness. This is often explained as the idea that everything, including our bodies and feelings, exists only through its connections with other things, so nothing is fixed or separate. The most famous line is shiki soku ze ku, meaning that form is emptiness.

The sutra ends with a short mantra, gyate gyate, which is not translated but keeps the sound of the original language. Many schools of Japanese Buddhism chant it, though some, such as Jodo Shinshu and Nichiren Buddhism, usually do not. Many people also copy it by hand, one character at a time. Even without understanding every word, I find its steady rhythm calming.

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

般若心経は、最も短い仏教のお経の一つです。日本で読まれているのは漢訳で、300字に満たない長さです。中心にあるのは「空」の考え方で、どんなものも、それだけで成り立っているわけではない、という教えです。日本の多くの宗派が葬儀や法事で唱え、写経として手で書き写す人もいます。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QDo I need to be Buddhist to copy the Heart Sutra?

ANo. Many temples offer shakyo sessions to anyone, and you don't need to read Japanese. You usually trace the characters printed under a thin sheet of paper, and some temples keep the finished copy as an offering.

般若心経を書き写すのに、仏教徒である必要はありますか。いいえ。写経の体験は多くの寺で誰でも受けられ、日本語が読めなくても大丈夫です。たいていは、薄い紙の下に敷いた手本の字をなぞって書きます。書き終えたものを、お供えとして寺に納められるところもあります。

QWhat does the title mean?

AHannya comes from the Sanskrit word prajna, which means wisdom. The full title is often translated as the Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, so heart here means the core of the teaching.

題名にはどんな意味があるのですか。「般若」は、知恵を意味するサンスクリット語の「プラジュニャー」から来ています。正式な題名は「知恵の完成の心髄を説くお経」のように訳されることが多く、ここでの「心」は教えの核心という意味です。

誤解されやすいA common misunderstanding

MYTHThe Heart Sutra is a prayer asking the Buddha for help.
