Haiden to honden means a shrine's front hall for prayer and the closed sanctuary behind it.
Many Shinto shrines have two main buildings. The haiden, or worship hall, is the one in front, where visitors toss a coin, ring the bell and pray. The honden, or main sanctuary, stands behind it and is where the kami, or deity, is believed to dwell. The honden is usually closed, and ordinary visitors don't go inside, so many people never notice it.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
When you visit a Shinto shrine in Japan, the building where you ring the bell and pray is called the haiden, or worship hall. Many visitors think the kami, or deity, is inside that building, but that's not quite right. The kami is believed to dwell in the honden, the main sanctuary, which usually stands behind the haiden.
The honden is often smaller and is kept closed. Inside is an object that the kami is said to dwell in, such as a mirror, which ordinary visitors never see. So when you pray at the haiden, you're actually facing the honden beyond it. At some shrines, there's also a hall between the two where offerings are made.
Interestingly, a few old shrines have no honden at all. At Omiwa Shrine in Nara, for example, the mountain behind the shrine is itself treated as sacred, so people pray toward the mountain. I think knowing this makes a shrine visit more interesting, because you start to notice the building behind the one you're standing in front of.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech

Background
