Gero Onsen is a hot spring town in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, along the Hida River. In the 1600s, the scholar Hayashi Razan named it as one of Japan's three finest hot springs, together with Arima and Kusatsu. The water is alkaline and feels smooth on the skin, so people call it a "beauty bath." It is also an easy stop on the way to Takayama.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Gero Onsen is a hot spring town in the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, built along the Hida River. It is often called one of Japan's three famous hot springs.

That list goes back to Hayashi Razan, a Confucian scholar of the 1600s, who wrote that the best hot springs in the country were Arima, Kusatsu and Gero. The water here is alkaline, with a pH of about 9.2, so it feels slippery, almost like soap. That is why people call it a "beauty bath."

The town has foot baths along the streets that anyone can use for free, so you can warm your feet while walking around. It is also an easy stop on the train line to Takayama. I think Gero is a good choice if you want a classic hot spring town that is easy to reach.

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWho decided that these were the three best hot springs?

AIt was not an official ranking. Hayashi Razan, a scholar who served the Tokugawa shoguns, simply wrote that Arima, Kusatsu and Gero were the best, and the phrase stuck. Today it works mostly as a nickname for tourism.

QWhy does the water feel so slippery?

AThe water is alkaline, at around pH 9.2. Alkaline water softens the outer layer of your skin a little, a bit like mild soap, so your skin feels smooth afterward.

QWhere does the name Gero come from?

AIt is said to come from an old post station on the road into the Hida area, which was called Shimo-no-tomari. Over time the reading changed and it became Gero.

Phrases you can use

  • Gero is one of the three famous hot springs of Japan.
  • The water makes your skin feel really smooth.
  • There are free foot baths all over town.

Background
