Gakkyu heisa is closing one school class for a few days because many of its students are sick.
Gakkyu heisa means closing a single class for a few days when an illness like the flu spreads. If enough students in one class are absent, that class stays home while the rest of the school keeps going. Japan's School Health and Safety Act allows schools to close temporarily to stop an infection. If it spreads further, a whole grade or even the whole school may close.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Every winter, and sometimes even in autumn, Japanese parents get a message from school saying their child's class is closed. This is called gakkyu heisa, or class closure. It usually happens when the flu spreads. Instead of closing the whole school, only the class with many sick students stays home for a few days, so the illness doesn't spread to everyone else.
If it reaches other classes, a whole grade or the whole school can be closed. The legal basis is the School Health and Safety Act, which allows the body that runs a school to close all or part of it temporarily to prevent infection. The exact rules are set locally.
In Sapporo, for example, the guideline is to close a class when 20 percent of its students are absent with flu-like symptoms, and to keep it closed for about three days. For children, it can feel like a surprise holiday, but it isn't one. They're expected to stay home and rest, and it can be a real headache for working parents.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy close just one class instead of the whole school?
ABecause an illness often starts in one classroom. Closing only that class can slow the spread while the other students keep learning.
QCan kids go out and play during a class closure?
AThey're supposed to stay home. The point is to stop the infection, so schools usually ask children not to go to crowded places.
QWhat about a student who actually has the flu?
AThat's a separate rule. A student with the flu has to stay home until five days have passed since it started and two days have passed since the fever went down. For preschool children, it's three days after the fever.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHA class closure is like a short vacation.
FACTStudents are expected to stay home and rest, and teachers often give them work to do. It's a measure to stop an illness, not a day off.

Background
