Enbu is a martial arts demonstration where partners show techniques together instead of competing to win.
Enbu means a demonstration of martial arts. Two or more people perform set techniques together in front of an audience, at a shrine festival, a school event, or a big annual gathering. Nobody wins or loses. In aikido, many schools hold no competitions at all, so enbu is where students show what they have practiced. Watching one, you are judging skill and control, not who is stronger.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
In most sports, the big event is a match, and someone wins. In Japanese martial arts there is another kind of event, called enbu, which simply means a demonstration. Two people, or a small group, step onto a mat or a shrine courtyard and perform techniques they have practiced together.
One attacks, the other answers, and then they switch roles. It looks a bit like a fight, but nobody is trying to beat anyone. The partner is closer to a dance partner than an opponent, and a good enbu depends on both people trusting each other.
In aikido, many schools hold no competitions at all, because the art is not about defeating an opponent, so demonstrations are where people show their progress. Enbu is also performed as an offering at shrines, and older sword and archery schools often show their skills this way. I find it beautiful to watch, because you can see years of practice in a few seconds of movement.
演武えんぶenbua martial arts demonstration performed instead of a match
In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIs the fighting in a demonstration real?
AThe techniques are real, but the order is agreed in advance. Both people know what is coming, which lets them move fast and hard without getting hurt.
QIf there's no winner, how do you know who is good?
AYou look at timing, balance, and control. A skilled pair makes it look effortless, and the person thrown lands safely every time.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHA martial arts demonstration is just a staged show with fake moves.
FACTThe order is planned, but the techniques are the real ones practiced every day, and doing them at full speed takes years of training.

Background
