An ashiyu is a public foot bath where you sit fully dressed and put your feet in hot spring water.
An ashiyu is a shallow hot spring bath for feet only. You sit on the edge, roll up your pants, and put your feet in. They are usually free, found in hot spring towns, at stations and even on some train platforms. For visitors who are nervous about communal naked bathing, this is the easy way to try hot spring water.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
An ashiyu is a public foot bath. It is a shallow trough of hot spring water with a bench along the edge, and you sit down, roll up your pants and put your feet in, fully clothed. Most are free, and you find them along the main street of hot spring towns, outside stations, at expressway service areas and occasionally on a train platform.
They exist partly because they are cheap for a town to build and partly because they work: a foot bath warms you surprisingly thoroughly, and twenty minutes will take the ache out of a day of walking.
Bring your own small towel, because almost none provide them, or buy one for a couple of hundred yen at the shop next door. The etiquette is simple. Wash or at least rinse your feet first if there is a tap, do not put anything else in the water, and dry your feet before walking away.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIs it really free?
AMost are, especially the ones run by a town or a tourist association. Some at inns or cafes are free if you are a customer. Towels are almost never provided, so bring one or buy the small printed towels sold everywhere nearby.
QDoes a foot bath actually do anything?
AIt warms you far more than you expect, because the blood in your feet circulates through the whole body. People with cold hands and feet find it works quickly. It is not a medical treatment, and the same cautions apply as for any hot bath.
