When he meets someone who is hungry, he lets them eat part of his face. Almost every Japanese child grows up with him, so he is one of the first characters many people in Japan ever know.

If you have small children in Japan, you will meet Anpanman everywhere, on TV, on snacks, on shoes and on toys. He was created by the writer and artist Yanase Takashi. The first picture book came out in 1973, and the TV cartoon began in 1988 and has been on the air for decades.
What surprises many visitors is how he helps people. His head is a bun filled with sweet bean paste, and when someone is hungry, he tears off a piece of his face and gives it to them. Afterward, the baker Uncle Jam makes him a new face.
His enemy is Baikinman, a germ who causes trouble, but the stories are gentle, and even the fights usually end with Baikinman just flying off into the sky. Yanase said that he wanted a hero who saves people from hunger, because he believed that was the most basic kind of justice. I think that idea is why the character still feels warm to adults, too.

豆知識Background
アンパンマンを生んだのは、やなせたかし（1919〜2013年）です。幼い子ども向けの絵本『あんぱんまん』が1973年に出版され、テレビアニメ『それいけ！アンパンマン』は1988年10月に日本テレビ系で始まりました。やなせは、本当の正義とは飢えた人にパンを分けることだと考え、自分の顔を食べさせるヒーローを描いたと語っています。登場するキャラクターの多くは、パンやおにぎりなどの食べものがもとになっています。2025年には、やなせ夫妻をモデルにしたNHKの連続テレビ小説『あんぱん』が放送されました。
