In Japan, people joke that when you sneeze, someone somewhere is talking about you.
When someone sneezes in Japan, people often joke, "Someone must be talking about you." One well-known saying even gives each number a meaning: one sneeze means praise, two means someone dislikes you, three means someone is in love with you, and four means you're catching a cold. Few people take it seriously, but many people know it.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
In Japan, if you suddenly sneeze, a friend might smile and say, "Someone's talking about you." It's a light joke, but it comes from an old belief.
One well-known version counts the sneezes: one means someone is praising you, two means someone is saying bad things about you, three means someone has fallen for you, and four means you've simply caught a cold. There are several versions of the saying.
Another difference from English is what happens after a sneeze. Most Japanese people don't say anything like "Bless you." Staying quiet isn't rude. It just isn't part of the custom. I find it funny that in Japan a sneeze turns into gossip, while in English it gets a blessing.

In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhat should I say when someone sneezes in Japan?
AUsually nothing. There's no set phrase like "Bless you." If the person keeps sneezing, you can ask if they're OK or if they're catching a cold.
QWhere does the idea come from?
ANobody knows for sure. In old Japan, a sneeze was sometimes seen as a bad sign, and people said a short charm to protect themselves. The word kushami itself is said to come from that charm, kusame.
QDo people cover their mouth?
AYes, especially in public. People sneeze into a handkerchief, a tissue, or their elbow, and many wear a mask during cold and hay fever season.

Background
