Yumitori shiki is the bow-twirling ceremony that ends each day of a sumo tournament.

Yumitori shiki is a short ceremony held right after the last bout of each day of a sumo tournament. One wrestler steps into the ring with a long bow and spins and swings it in a set pattern. It's said to come from an old custom where the winner of the final bout received a bow as a prize and danced with it. Today it signals that the day's sumo is over.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Yumitori shiki is the bow-twirling ceremony you see at the very end of each day of a professional sumo tournament. Right after the final bout, one wrestler climbs into the ring holding a long bow. He spins it, swings it over his head, and moves it around his body in a fixed pattern.

It's said to come from an old custom where the winner of the last bout was given a bow as a prize and danced with it. At first, the ceremony was held only on the last day of a tournament, but since January 1952, it has been performed every day. The wrestler who does it is usually a lower-ranked man from the stable of a yokozuna, the top rank.

There's one rule people love: if he drops the bow, he must not touch the ring with his hand. Instead, he flips it up with his foot and catches it. I think it's a nice way to end the day, because it slows things down after the most exciting match.

As a short speech

Background
