Yubatake is the steaming hot spring source in the middle of Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma.

Yubatake, which means "hot water field," is a large open-air hot spring source in the center of Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma Prefecture. Steaming water comes out of the ground and runs down long wooden channels. The channels cool the water before it's sent to inns and baths. They also collect yunohana, mineral deposits that are said to have given the place its name.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Kusatsu Onsen in Gunma is one of Japan's best-known hot spring towns, and its heart is a place called yubatake. The name means hot water field. It's an open-air spring right in the middle of town, where steaming, yellowish-green water comes out of the ground and flows down a row of long wooden channels.

The water is very hot when it comes out, and the channels help cool it before it's piped to inns and public baths. Along the way, mineral deposits called yunohana collect in the channels. People say that's where the name comes from, because the minerals are harvested there like a crop. You'll notice the smell of sulfur as soon as you get close.

Yubatake isn't a place to bathe, but people walk around it, take photos, and come back at night, when it's lit up. Nearby, you can watch a show of yumomi, where people stir the hot water with long wooden boards to cool it. For me, it's one of the few places where you can actually see where onsen water comes from.

湯畑ゆばたけyubatakethe open-air hot spring source in the center of Kusatsu Onsen

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QCan I bathe in the yubatake?

Background
