Wagasa are traditional Japanese umbrellas. The frame is made of split bamboo, and the cover is washi, or Japanese paper, coated with oil so that it sheds rain. There is a plain, sturdy everyday type called bangasa and a more elegant type called janomegasa. Today you mostly see them in dance, kabuki, tea gatherings and wedding photos.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
A wagasa is a Japanese umbrella made by hand from bamboo and paper. The ribs are split from bamboo, and the paper is glued on and coated with oil, which makes it surprisingly waterproof. By the Edo period, umbrellas like these had spread to ordinary people.
The simple, sturdy kind was called bangasa, and a more stylish kind was called janomegasa, after a ring pattern that looks like a snake's eye. Western umbrellas replaced them in daily life, but they have not disappeared.
You see them in traditional dance and kabuki, as the big red umbrellas at outdoor tea gatherings, and in wedding photos at shrines. Gifu is one of the best-known places where they are still made. I think holding one makes you walk a little more slowly.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QDoesn't the paper get wet and tear?
AThe paper is coated with oil, so rain runs off it. It is fine in normal rain, but after using it you should open it and let it dry in the shade.
QWhy does it look so different when it's closed?
AA wagasa folds the opposite way from a Western umbrella. When it is closed, the paper is tucked inside and the bamboo ribs show on the outside.
QWhere can I buy a real one?
ACraft shops in places like Kyoto and Gifu sell handmade ones. A real wagasa goes through many steps and many hands, so it costs far more than an ordinary umbrella. Cheap souvenir versions are often for display only.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHWagasa are just decorations and can't be used in the rain.
FACTA real wagasa is made to be used in the rain, because the paper is oiled. Some paper parasols and souvenir versions are not waterproof, so check before you buy.

Background
