Shibuya sukuranburu kosatenthe all-way pedestrian crossing outside Shibuya Station

Crowds crossing in every direction at Shibuya’s scramble crossing.

The Shibuya scramble is an all-way crossing where pedestrians from every direction cross at once.

Outside Shibuya Station in Tokyo, all traffic stops at once and pedestrians cross in every direction, including diagonally. At busy times a few thousand people cross in one signal. Nothing is built there for visitors; it is a working junction. What draws people is the sight of that many pedestrians moving through each other without anyone stopping or colliding.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

The Shibuya scramble crossing is one of those places that is famous for being ordinary. All the traffic lights turn red together, and pedestrians pour across in every direction including diagonally. At peak times, a few thousand people cross in a single signal change. There is nothing to see there in the usual sense: no monument, no ticket, no history.

What people come for is the choreography. Everyone is walking at a normal speed, nobody is looking up, and somehow no one collides. Visitors film it because that many people converging at once without stopping is an unusual sight. Two honest notes. First, this is somebody's commute.

Standing in the middle to film blocks people who are trying to get to work. Film from the second floor of the station building or a cafe overlooking it. Second, the famous dog statue, Hachiko, is right beside it, and it is much smaller than people expect and surrounded by a crowd waiting for friends.

Shibuya sukuranburu kosatenthe all-way pedestrian crossing outside Shibuya Station

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QHow many people actually cross?

AFigures in the thousands per signal change are quoted at peak times, and the numbers vary by source and by how they are counted. Treat any single figure you read with caution.

QWhy doesn't anyone bump into each other?

APeople keep a steady pace and adjust early rather than stopping. It is less about politeness than about everyone predicting everyone else, which works only if nobody stops suddenly.

QWhere's the best place to watch it?

AFrom above. The station building's upper floors, the pedestrian deck, or a cafe with a window over the crossing. Standing in the middle is the one thing to avoid.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHShibuya crossing is a tourist attraction built as a spectacle.

FACTIt is an ordinary working junction in a commuter district. It became famous because of how the crowd moves, and standing in it to film obstructs people going to work.

Phrases you can use

  • Everyone crosses at once, in every direction.
  • It's just a normal crossing — people are commuting.
  • Film it from above, not from the middle.
  • Keep walking. Stopping is what causes collisions.
  • The Hachiko statue is right there, and it's smaller than you'd think.

Background
