Temari are balls wrapped in thread and stitched with colorful patterns, once a toy and now a craft.
Temari are hand-made balls covered in colorful thread. A core of cotton or other soft material is wrapped tightly in thread, and then patterns like flowers, stars, or stripes are stitched on top. They started out as toys that children bounced while singing songs. Today, most temari are decorations and gifts, and several regions have their own styles.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Temari are beautiful balls made entirely of thread. To make one, you start with a soft core, wrap it again and again in thin thread until it's round and firm, and then mark out lines on the surface like the lines of longitude on a globe.
Using those lines as a guide, you stitch geometric patterns in bright colors, such as flowers, stars, and diamonds. A detailed temari can take many hours. Long ago, temari were toys. Girls bounced them and sang counting songs called temari-uta. Rubber balls later took over that role, and temari became something to look at rather than play with.
Today, people give them as gifts, hang them as New Year decorations, or make them as a hobby. Some regions, such as Kaga in Ishikawa and Matsumoto in Nagano, are known for their own styles. I like temari because they turn something as simple as thread into a small piece of math and art.
手まりてまりtemaria ball wrapped in colorful embroidered thread
In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QCan you actually play with a temari?
AOld ones were made for bouncing, but most temari today are decorations. They're light and soft, so they don't bounce like a rubber ball.
QHow do they get the patterns so even?
ABefore stitching, the maker divides the ball with guide lines, a bit like a globe. The patterns are built on that grid, so they come out balanced on every side.
Phrases you can use
- This ball is made entirely of thread.
- Every pattern is stitched by hand.
- It used to be a children's toy.
- It makes a nice gift because it lasts for years.
Background
