Fish-shaped taiyaki pastries with one cut piece revealing red bean filling.

Taiyaki is a fish-shaped pancake filled with sweet red bean paste.

Taiyaki is a cake baked in a hinged iron mold shaped like a sea bream, filled with sweet red bean paste. It is sold hot from small shops and stalls, especially in winter. Other fillings exist, including custard, chocolate and sweet potato, but red bean is the standard.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Taiyaki is a pancake-like cake baked in a hinged iron mold in the shape of a sea bream, filled with sweet red bean paste. The fish shape is not just decoration for children: the sea bream is an auspicious fish in Japan, served at celebrations, and it was expensive, so a cheap sweet in its shape is often explained as a small joke about having something lucky you could actually afford.

It is winter food, bought hot from a stall or a small shop and eaten walking, and the paper sleeve is there because the filling holds heat. There are two schools of thought about how to eat it, from the head or from the tail, and asking a group of Japanese people will often start a friendly argument. There is also a distinction enthusiasts care about: molds that bake one fish at a time over a flame give a thinner, crisper skin than the large plates that bake many at once.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhy a fish shape?

AThe sea bream is an auspicious fish, eaten at celebrations and associated with good fortune, but costly. A common explanation is that a cheap sweet shaped like one let ordinary people have the lucky fish.

QIs the filling always red bean?

ATraditionally yes, and it is still the default. Custard is the common second choice, and shops also sell chocolate, sweet potato, cheese and seasonal fillings. Some places sell a savory version with sausage.

Phrases you can use

Background
