Shoko is the act of offering a pinch of incense at a Buddhist funeral or memorial service.
Shoko means "burning incense." At a Buddhist funeral or memorial service, each guest walks up to the altar, takes a small pinch of powdered incense and drops it onto a burning coal. Then they put their hands together and pray quietly for the person who has died. It is a way of saying goodbye and showing respect, and the details differ by Buddhist school.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
If you go to a Buddhist funeral in Japan, you will probably take part in shoko, which means offering incense. When your turn comes, you walk up to the altar, where there is a photo of the person who has died. You bow to the family first, and then to the photo. Next, you pick up a small pinch of powdered incense with three fingers and drop it onto a burning piece of charcoal.
The sweet smoke rises, and you put your palms together and pray for a moment. Finally, you bow again and go back to your seat. How many times you drop the incense, once, twice or three times, depends on the Buddhist school, and even Japanese people often get confused.
That is why many people simply copy the person in front of them. Where there is little room, a tray of incense may be passed along the rows instead. To me, the most important thing is not getting every step right, but showing quiet respect for the person and their family.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech

Background
