Shoka are songs created for Japanese school music classes, starting in the Meiji era.

Shoka are songs that were written for schoolchildren to sing, starting in the late 1800s, when Japan built its modern school system. Many use Western-style melodies with Japanese lyrics about nature, the seasons and home. Famous examples include "Furusato," or "Hometown," and "Kojo no Tsuki," or "The Moon over the Ruined Castle." Many Japanese adults still know them by heart from music class.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

If you ask a group of Japanese adults to sing together, there's a good chance they'll choose a shoka. Shoka are songs made for schools. When Japan set up a modern school system in the Meiji era, the government wanted children to learn music, and it needed songs in Japanese that used Western scales.

So composers and poets were asked to write them. The most famous collection is a set of six songbooks for elementary schools put out by the education ministry between 1911 and 1914. Many of those songs were written by committees, and for a long time people didn't know who had written each one.

The song "Furusato," or "Hometown," first appeared in that series in 1914 and is still sung at school events and local gatherings. Another classic, "Kojo no Tsuki," was composed by Taki Rentaro to words by the poet Doi Bansui and published in 1901 for middle schools. What I find interesting is that these songs were meant to teach, yet people sing them today simply because they're beautiful.

唱歌しょうかshokasongs written for Japanese schools since the Meiji era

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Background
