Expressway rest stops come in two sizes: service areas with restaurants, and parking areas with just a bathroom and vending machines.
Japan's expressways are dotted with rest stops built directly into the road, since drivers cannot simply pull onto the shoulder as they might elsewhere. A service area, roughly every fifty kilometers, has restaurants, shops and sometimes a hot spring or a themed food court, while a parking area, more frequent, is usually just a bathroom, vending machines and a few parking spaces. Neither should be confused with a michi no eki, a similar-looking rest stop built on an ordinary road rather than an expressway.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
On a Japanese expressway you cannot simply pull onto the shoulder the way you might on an ordinary road, so rest stops are built directly into the highway system at planned intervals. A service area, SA, comes roughly every fifty kilometers and can look like a small shopping mall, with a food court built around local specialties, souvenir shops, and occasionally something unexpected like a hot spring bath or a dog run.
A parking area, PA, is smaller and more frequent, spaced roughly every fifteen kilometers, usually offering little more than restrooms, vending machines and a place to nap in the car, though some larger PAs have grown convenience stores of their own. Regional competition between operators has turned food at these rest stops into something people plan trips around, with certain SAs known nationally for one specific dish or dessert. The one mix-up worth avoiding is confusing either of these with a michi no eki, which looks similar but sits on a regular road you can enter without paying a toll, not on the expressway itself.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhat's the actual difference between an SA and a PA?
AAn SA is bigger, spaced further apart, and usually has restaurants and shops; a PA is smaller, more frequent, and mostly just restrooms and vending machines, though the line has blurred as some PAs added shops.
QDo I pay anything extra to stop at one?
ANo. They sit inside the toll system, before any exit gate, so stopping costs nothing extra. On some routes, trial programs for ETC users also let you briefly exit to a nearby michi no eki and return without a toll penalty, but only at designated places.
QIs this the same as a michi no eki?
ANo. A michi no eki looks similar but is built on an ordinary toll-free road, not inside the expressway, so you usually can't reach one without exiting the highway.

Background
