Ritto is the first day of winter in the traditional calendar, falling around November 7th.
Ritto is one of the 24 solar terms, the old calendar that divides the year by the sun's position. It marks the start of winter and usually falls on November 7th or 8th. Because the calendar follows day length rather than temperature, it often still feels like autumn. That's why Japanese weather reports say it's winter only "on the calendar."

Ritto is the first day of winter in Japan's traditional calendar. It is one of the 24 solar terms, which divide the year according to the position of the sun, and it usually falls on November 7th or 8th. Many visitors are surprised, because early November in Tokyo can still be warm and the autumn leaves haven't even peaked.
The key is that this calendar is about sunlight, not temperature. Winter is the three months with the shortest days, so the winter solstice sits in the middle of winter instead of at the start. Temperatures lag behind the sun by about a month, which is why the coldest days come in late January.
Japanese people are well aware of this gap. On the news, you'll often hear that it's winter "on the calendar," and the word ritto appears in seasonal greetings in letters. To me, ritto is less about cold and more about the evenings suddenly getting dark early.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy does winter start in early November when it's still warm?
AThe old calendar is based on the sun. Winter means the three months with the shortest days, centered on the winter solstice. The temperature catches up about a month later.
QDo people do anything special on ritto?
ANot really. It's not a holiday, and there's no fixed custom across the country. People mostly notice it on the news, in shops and in letters, as a sign to start getting ready for winter.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHRitto means the cold weather has arrived.

Background
