A randoseru is the boxy, rigid backpack that most Japanese primary school children carry for all six years.
Most Japanese primary school children carry the same kind of bag: a boxy backpack of real or synthetic leather with a rigid frame. It is not a school rule in most places, but it is close to universal. They are expensive, often bought by grandparents, and designed to survive six years of daily use.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
If you see a group of Japanese primary school children, most of them will be carrying the same thing: a randoseru, a boxy backpack of real or synthetic leather with a rigid internal frame. What surprises people is that in most schools this is not actually a rule.
There is no law and usually no regulation; it is simply what everyone does, and a child with a different bag would stand out. They are expensive, often costing as much as a piece of furniture, and it is common for grandparents to buy one as a gift before the child starts school.
The reason for the price is the construction: it has to hold its shape and survive being dropped, sat on and rained on every day for six years, and many are guaranteed for exactly that period. Colors used to be black for boys and red for girls, and that has broken down substantially, with a wide range now sold and chosen by the child.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIs it compulsory?
AUsually not. Most schools do not require it, and a handful of municipalities have moved to lighter standard bags. It persists because it is what everyone does, not because it is enforced.
QWhy so expensive?
AIt is built to last six years of daily abuse, with a rigid frame, reinforced stitching and often a six-year guarantee. Many are handmade in Japan, and the gift-giving custom supports the price.
QIsn't it heavy for a small child?
AThis is an active debate here. The bag itself plus textbooks can be a significant fraction of a young child's body weight, and the education ministry has issued guidance allowing children to leave some materials at school.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHJapanese law requires primary school children to use a randoseru.
FACTThere is no such law and most schools do not require it. It continues by convention, and some areas have adopted lighter alternatives.

Background
