壱In one line一言で言うと

Okyo are Buddhist sutras that monks chant at funerals, memorial services and temple rituals.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

Okyo are Buddhist sutras, the texts that monks chant at funerals, memorial services and daily temple rituals. Most sutras used in Japan are old Chinese translations of Indian texts, read aloud in a Japanese way of pronouncing the characters. Because of that, most listeners don't understand the words. The chanting itself, with its steady rhythm, is a big part of the ritual.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Okyo are Buddhist sutras, and most people in Japan hear them at funerals and memorial services. A monk sits in front of the altar and chants in a deep, steady voice, often keeping time on a wooden drum called a mokugyo. Many foreign visitors are surprised to learn that most Japanese people don't understand what is being chanted.

That's because most sutras used in Japan are classical Chinese translations of texts that first came from India. They're read aloud in old Japanese readings of the Chinese characters, so they don't sound like everyday Japanese. Different schools of Buddhism chant different sutras.

The Heart Sutra is one of the best known and is used by many schools, but not by all of them. Some people copy sutras by hand as a kind of meditation, and some families chant a short one at the home altar. To me, okyo work less like a message to understand and more like a sound that tells everyone this is a special moment.

お経おきょうokyoBuddhist sutras chanted by monks

葬式で聞くあの響き。日本語なのに、ほとんどの人が意味を知らない。

壱一言で言うとIn one line

お経とは、お坊さんが葬式や法事、寺の儀式で唱える仏教の経典のことです。

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

お経は仏教の経典で、お坊さんが葬式や法事、寺の毎日のおつとめで唱えます。日本で使われるお経の多くは、インドの経典を昔の中国で訳したもので、その漢字を日本式の音で読み上げます。そのため、聞いている人のほとんどは言葉の意味が分かりません。一定のリズムで唱えること自体が、儀式の大事な部分になっています。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QDo Japanese people understand the sutras?

AMost don't. Sutras are usually read in old readings of classical Chinese, so they sound very different from modern Japanese. Some temples hand out printed versions with explanations, and monks sometimes explain the meaning in a short talk after the service.

日本の人は、お経の意味が分かるのですか。ほとんどの人は分かりません。お経はたいてい古い中国語の文を昔の読み方で読むので、いまの日本語とはまったく違って聞こえます。説明付きの印刷物を配る寺もあり、法要のあとにお坊さんが短い話の中で意味を説明することもあります。

QDo I need to chant along at a funeral?

ANo. Guests usually just sit quietly and listen. Sometimes the family is handed a booklet and invited to join in, but nobody expects a visitor to know the words.

葬式では、一緒にお経を唱える必要がありますか。いいえ。参列者はふつう、静かに座って聞いているだけです。遺族に経本が配られ、一緒に唱えるよう促されることもありますが、参列者が言葉を知っているとはだれも思っていません。

そのまま使えるフレーズPhrases you can use

  • It's based on old Chinese translations of Indian texts.インドの経典を昔の中国で訳したものがもとになっています。
  • You don't have to join in. Just listen quietly.一緒に唱えなくて大丈夫です。静かに聞いていてください。
  • Different schools of Buddhism chant different sutras.宗派によって、唱えるお経が違います。

豆知識Background
