ohakamairivisiting the family grave
Essential
A family cleaning and praying at an ancestral grave.

Ohakamairi is visiting the family grave to clean it, make offerings and report how you are.

Many Japanese families visit the family grave several times a year, especially at the spring and autumn equinoxes and at Obon. You clean the stone, pull the weeds, pour water over the monument, put flowers and incense in place, and put your hands together. Many families share one grave holding the ashes of several generations.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Visiting the family grave is one of the most ordinary religious acts in Japanese life, and many people do it regardless of what they believe. Families go several times a year: at the spring and autumn equinoxes, at Obon (in August in most regions), and on the anniversary of a death.

What you actually do is practical. You bring a bucket and a ladle, pull the weeds around the plot, scrub the stone, and pour water over the top of it. Then you put fresh flowers in the holders, light incense, and put your hands together for a moment.

Many people speak to the grave, silently or out loud, and tell the family what has happened since last time: a new job, a marriage, a grandchild. Many families share a single grave with the ashes of several generations in it, so you are not visiting one person. You are visiting the household.

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhy do you pour water over the gravestone?

APartly to clean it, partly as an offering. Water is a basic offering in Buddhism, and in some interpretations it is said to relieve the thirst of the dead. Both explanations are given, and most people do not distinguish.

QIs a Japanese grave for one person?

AUsually not. A family grave holds the cremated remains of many generations, and the family name is carved on the stone rather than an individual name. Individual names are carved on the side or on a separate stone tablet beside it.

QWhat happens if there is nobody left to visit?

AThis is a growing problem. Graves with no one to tend them are called muenbaka, or abandoned graves, and with the falling birth rate many families are closing their graves and moving ashes to collective or tree burial sites.

Background
