Standard

Nihonbashi is a historic bridge in central Tokyo, the starting point of Japan's main roads.

Nihonbashi is a bridge, and also the business district around it, in central Tokyo. The first wooden bridge was built in the early 1600s, and in the Edo period the five main roads out of the city all started here. The stone bridge you see today opened in 1911 and is an Important Cultural Property. Since 1963, an elevated expressway has run right above it, but there's a plan to move it underground.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Nihonbashi literally means "Japan Bridge," and for a long time it was the center of the country's road map. When Tokugawa Ieyasu built up Edo, now Tokyo, in the early 1600s, a wooden bridge was put across the river here, and the five main highways of the Edo period all began at this spot.

Distances to other cities were measured from it, and that tradition still lives on, because the marker for the starting point of Japan's national roads is set in the middle of the bridge. The bridge you can walk across today is made of stone and opened in 1911.

The area around it was Edo's busiest market district, and some of Tokyo's oldest shops and a famous department store are still nearby. What surprises many visitors is the expressway running right over the bridge, built in 1963 just before the Tokyo Olympics. Work is now underway to move it underground, so in the future you should be able to see the sky from the bridge again.

日本橋にほんばしnihonbashithe bridge in central Tokyo where Japan's main roads begin

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhy is there a highway right on top of a famous bridge?

AIt was built quickly before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, and one reason often given is that running it over rivers meant less land had to be bought in the crowded city. Many people now regret how it looks, and there's a project to move that section underground.

QIs it really the center of Japan?

ANot geographically. It's the starting point for measuring road distances, a role it has had since the Edo period. A marker for it is set in the road on the bridge.

QIs the current bridge the original one?

ANo. The first one was wooden and was rebuilt many times. The stone bridge there now opened in 1911.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHNihonbashi is the geographic center of Japan.

FACTIt's the starting point for measuring distances on Japan's main roads, not the middle of the map. That role goes back to the Edo period.

Phrases you can use

  • Road distances to other cities are measured from here.
  • The stone bridge you're standing on opened in 1911.

Background
