Mushiburo is a traditional steam bath, a common style of public bathing before deep tubs spread.
Mushiburo is a steam bath, where you sit or lie in a small, hot, steamy room instead of soaking in water. In Japan, many early public baths worked this way. Bathhouses with deep tubs became the norm gradually, over the Edo period and later. Today, a few traditional steam baths survive, such as the herbal steam bath in Kannawa, Beppu.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Most people think of a Japanese bath as soaking up to your shoulders in very hot water. But for a long time, bathing in Japan often meant steam. In a mushiburo, or steam bath, you sit in a small, closed room filled with hot steam, sweat for a while, and then wash off.
Many of the earliest public bathhouses in Edo, which is now Tokyo, were steam baths. Over time, they changed step by step. First came rooms with a shallow tub, where people sat in the steam with only their legs in the water. Later, deeper tubs became common, and the steam bath slowly faded.
A few places still keep the old style. In Kannawa, a hot spring area in Beppu, there's a stone steam room where you lie on a floor covered with fragrant herbs, heated by hot spring water from below. I like telling visitors this, because it shows that steam bathing has deep roots in Japan, long before the recent sauna boom.
In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIs it the same as a sauna?
AIt's similar, but Japanese steam baths usually use moist steam rather than very dry heat. At Kannawa in Beppu, for example, you lie on a warm stone floor covered with herbs.
QWhy did Japan switch from steam to soaking?
AThe details aren't completely clear, but the change happened step by step. First came baths with a shallow tub inside a steamy room, and later deeper tubs that people could soak in.
A common misunderstanding

Background
