Men-tenugui is a thin cotton cloth that kendo players wrap around their head under the face mask.
Men-tenugui is the cloth you see kendo players tie around their head just before putting on the men, or face mask. It soaks up sweat, keeps hair out of the eyes and helps the mask sit firmly. Many cloths are printed with a dojo's name or a short motto. Tying it neatly is one of the first things beginners learn.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
If you watch a kendo match, you may notice something just before the players put on their masks. They sit in seiza, or kneel, and carefully wrap a cotton cloth around their head. This is the men-tenugui. It's the same kind of thin cotton towel, called tenugui, that people in Japan have used for centuries. In kendo, it does several jobs.
It soaks up sweat so it doesn't run into the eyes. It keeps long hair in place. It also helps the heavy mask fit snugly, so it doesn't shift when a strike lands on the head. Many cloths are printed with a dojo's name, a tournament logo or a short phrase about practice, and members often get one as a souvenir.
There are a few common ways to tie it, and many teachers expect it to be neat, because sloppy gear is often seen as a sign of a careless attitude. I like that such a simple piece of cloth tells you so much about how kendo values preparation.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhy don't they just use a sweatband or a cap?
ASome beginners and children do use a cap-style version that's easier to put on. But the traditional cloth is thin, cheap and easy to adjust to any head, and tying it yourself is part of getting ready to practice.
QWhat do the words printed on it mean?
AIt depends on the cloth. Often it's the name of the dojo or school, or a short phrase about effort, focus or respect. If you're curious, ask the owner. Most people are happy to explain.

Background
