Kurashiki is a city in southern Okayama Prefecture. Its old center, called the Bikan Historical Quarter, runs along a small canal lined with willow trees and white-walled storehouses. In the Edo period, the town was ruled directly by the shogunate, and rice and other goods were shipped from here. Today it is a good place to see what an old merchant town looked like.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Kurashiki is a city in southern Okayama Prefecture, and its canal district is one of the best-known historic townscapes in western Japan. The heart of it is the Kurashiki River, a narrow canal lined with willow trees, stone bridges and old storehouses with white plaster walls. Many of the walls have a pattern of black tiles held in place with raised white joints, called namako-kabe.

In the Edo period, Kurashiki was not a castle town. It was land ruled directly by the shogunate, and merchants used the canal to ship rice and other goods. In the Meiji era, a cotton spinning mill was built here, and Ohara Magosaburo, who ran the company, founded the Ohara Museum of Art in 1930.

It was the first private museum in Japan to focus on Western art. In 1979, the canal area was chosen as one of the country's protected historic districts. When I walk there in the early morning, before the tour groups arrive, it feels like a quiet street from another century.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech
