Kitsune no yomeiri, or the fox's wedding, is what many Japanese call rain on a sunny day.
Kitsune no yomeiri means "the fox's wedding." In many parts of Japan, it is another name for a sunshower, when rain falls from a bright sky. In some places, it once meant mysterious lines of lights seen in the hills at night. Either way, it describes something strange enough that people blamed the foxes.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
When rain falls while the sun is still shining, many Japanese people call it kitsune no yomeiri, the fox's wedding. In Japanese folklore, foxes are clever, magical animals that can change shape and fool people.
A day when the weather itself seems to be playing a trick probably felt like the kind of day foxes would choose for a wedding. In some areas, the name was used for lines of mysterious lights in the hills at night, which looked like a lantern-lit wedding procession.
What surprises many people is that other languages have similar ideas. In Korean, a sunshower can be called the day a fox or a tiger gets married, and in South Africa people talk about a monkey's wedding. I love that people in so many places looked at the same sky and thought of a wedding.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QIs it a real wedding or just a saying?
AIt is a saying for the weather. But some towns hold festivals based on it. In Tsugawa, Niigata, a lantern-lit fox wedding procession is held every year on May 3rd.
QWhy foxes?
AIn Japanese folklore, foxes can change shape and trick people. Something odd, like rain from a clear sky or lights in the hills with no one there, was easy to blame on them.
QDo people still use the phrase?
AYes, most people know it. The plain word is tenkiame, which just means rain in sunny weather, and people use either one.

Background
