Katei homon is a short visit by a child's homeroom teacher to each student's home, usually in spring.
At many Japanese elementary schools, the homeroom teacher visits every student's home in April or May, soon after the school year starts. Each visit is often only ten or fifteen minutes. The teacher talks with a parent about the child and checks where the family lives and how the child gets to school. These days, many schools keep the visits short, hold them at the front door, or replace them with meetings at school.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Katei homon means a home visit by the homeroom teacher. In many Japanese elementary schools, and some junior high schools, the teacher spends a week or so in spring going from house to house, seeing every student's family. Each visit is short, often around ten or fifteen minutes.
The main purpose is simple: the teacher wants to know where each child lives, which way they walk to school, and what the family would like the teacher to know. That information matters if there is ever an emergency. For parents, though, the visit can feel like a test. Many people clean the whole house the night before and worry about whether to serve tea.
Schools often send a note saying that no tea or snacks are needed. The custom is also changing. Because so many parents work and teachers are very busy, more schools now hold the meeting at the front door, only check the location of the house, or meet parents at school instead.

In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QDo I have to let the teacher into my home?
ANo. Many visits happen at the front door, and some schools say so in advance. If you'd rather meet at school, you can usually ask the teacher.
QShould I offer the teacher tea?
ACheck the letter from the school first. Many schools ask parents not to serve anything, because the teacher visits several homes in a row.
QWhy does the teacher need to see where we live?
AMostly for safety. If there's an earthquake or a child doesn't come home, the teacher needs to know the home and the route to school.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHThe teacher comes to inspect how clean or how rich your home is.

Background
