Kaiju are giant monsters, like Godzilla, that stomp through cities in Japanese films and TV shows.
Kaiju literally means "strange beast," and it refers to the giant monsters of Japanese films and TV. The genre took off with Godzilla in 1954, and the TV series Ultraman brought a new monster into living rooms almost every week from 1966. In the classic works, the monsters were actors in rubber suits walking through miniature cities. Today, kaiju is also used in English for giant monsters in general.
参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文
Kaiju is the Japanese word for giant monsters, and many English speakers now use it too. The story starts with Godzilla, which came out in 1954. The film was a huge hit, and many more monster movies followed, such as Gamera in 1965.
In 1966, the TV series Ultraman began, and a new monster appeared almost every week, so children all over Japan grew up memorizing monster names the way kids today memorize Pokemon. What makes Japanese kaiju special is how they were made. Instead of using puppets or drawings, the studios put actors in heavy rubber suits and had them stomp through detailed miniature cities.
Kaiju are not always simple villains, either. Some stand for the dangers of science or nature, and some even become heroes who protect people. In 2013, the Hollywood film Pacific Rim called its monsters kaiju, which helped the word spread around the world. I think kaiju show how an idea from Japanese studios in the 1950s grew into a genre that people everywhere know.
怪獣かいじゅうkaijugiant monsters from Japanese films and TV shows
In one line
In 30 seconds
As a short speech
Questions people actually ask
QWhat's the difference between kaiju and yokai?
AYokai are creatures from old folk tales, like water imps and shape-shifting foxes, and many of them are small or mischievous. Kaiju are giant monsters created for films and TV in the 20th century, and they usually appear in modern cities.
QWere the monsters really people in suits?
AYes. In the classic films and TV shows, actors wore heavy rubber suits and walked through miniature sets. Many newer films use computer graphics instead, though some still mix in suits and miniatures.
A common misunderstanding
MYTHKaiju are always evil monsters that the hero has to defeat.
FACTMany kaiju are villains, but some protect people or become popular heroes. Godzilla itself has played both roles over the years.

Background
