insendrinking hot spring water
Advanced

Insen is drinking hot spring water for health, from taps or fountains approved for drinking.

Insen means drinking hot spring water. At some onsen towns, you'll find small fountains or taps where you can drink the water, often with a cup provided. The water usually tastes of iron, salt, or sulfur, and people drink a little at a time for their health. Never drink the bath water itself, though, because only water approved for drinking has been tested for safety.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Most people think of an onsen as something you soak in, but at some hot springs in Japan, you can also drink the water. This is called insen. In some onsen towns, you might find a small fountain or tap with a cup beside it, and a sign explaining the minerals in the water.

The taste can be a surprise. Some water tastes like iron, some is salty, and some smells of sulfur. Drinking spa water for health is also a long tradition in Europe, in countries like Germany and the Czech Republic. In Japan, it's controlled by law.

Under the Hot Springs Act, anyone who offers hot spring water for the public to drink needs permission from the local authorities, and the water has to be tested for bacteria. So the most important rule is simple: only drink from places that are marked for drinking, and never from the bath. I tried it once, and to be honest, it tasted like metal, but it was a fun experience.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QCan I drink the water in the onsen bath?

ANo. Bath water is shared by many people and isn't tested as drinking water. Only drink from a tap or fountain with a sign saying it's for drinking.

QIs it good for you?

AMany people believe so, and the water does contain minerals. But it isn't medicine, and some people should avoid it for health reasons. Read the sign by the tap, which explains who shouldn't drink it and how to drink it.

QWhy does it taste so strange?

AEach spring has its own mix of minerals. Water with a lot of iron tastes like metal, salty springs taste a bit like seawater, and sulfur springs smell like boiled eggs.

A common misunderstanding

MYTHAll hot spring water is safe to drink.

FACTOnly water that has been tested and approved can be offered for drinking. Most onsen water is meant for bathing only.

Background
