一期一会

ichigo ichieone time, one meeting
ことば・こころ Concepts / 伝統芸能・芸術 Arts標準 Standard
A tea host and guests sharing an attentive once-in-a-lifetime moment.

壱In one line一言で言うと

Ichigo ichie means that this gathering, with these people, will never happen again.

弐In 30 seconds30秒で説明する

Ichigo ichie is a four-character phrase from tea ceremony meaning one lifetime, one meeting. Even if the same people meet again tomorrow, that gathering will be a different one, so this one deserves your full attention. It is used at farewells, in speeches, and by anyone arguing that a moment should be treated as unrepeatable.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Ichigo ichie is four characters meaning, roughly, one lifetime, one meeting. It comes from the tea ceremony. A tea gathering has a host, a few guests, a scroll chosen for that day, flowers cut that morning, and a particular quality of light.

Even if exactly the same people meet in the same room next month, it will not be the same gathering, so the host is expected to prepare as though this were the only one. The phrase is usually credited to Ii Naosuke, who wrote it down in the nineteenth century, drawing on the teaching of Sen no Rikyu.

It has since escaped the tea room completely. You hear it in graduation speeches, at farewell parties, in sports, and from shop owners talking about customers. What I find useful about it is that it is not sentimental. It is an instruction: this will not come back, so pay attention now.

一期一会いちごいちえichigo ichieone time, one meeting

茶室から出た四文字。「この一回は二度と来ない」という、時間の扱い方。

壱一言で言うとIn one line

一期一会とは、この人たちとのこの集まりは二度と起きない、という意味です。

弐30秒で説明するIn 30 seconds

一期一会は茶の湯から出た四字熟語で、一生に一度の出会い、という意味です。同じ人と明日また会っても、それは別の集まりです。だからこの一度に全部の注意を向けるに値する。別れの場、スピーチ、そして「この瞬間は二度とない」と言いたいときに使われます。

参スピーチ・英作文As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs it only used about people?

AMostly, but not only. It is applied to a performance, a view, a meal, any occasion that cannot be repeated exactly. The core idea is the unrepeatability, not the people.

人に対してだけ使う言葉ですか。多くは人についてですが、それだけではありません。公演、風景、食事など、そのままの形では繰り返せない機会全般に使われます。核にあるのは人ではなく、繰り返せなさです。

QWho actually wrote it?

AThe phrase in its current form is credited to Ii Naosuke in his writing on tea, which draws on a line recorded from Sen no Rikyu's teaching by his disciple. The idea is older than the fixed wording.

これは誰が書いたものですか。現在の形は、茶について記した井伊直弼によるとされ、それは千利休の教えを弟子が書き留めた一節をもとにしています。言葉が固まる前から、考え方はありました。

QHow do I use it in English?

AYou generally explain it rather than translate it. "This particular moment will never come again, so treat it that way" carries the sense. Some English writers now use the phrase directly.

英語ではどう使えばいいですか。訳すより説明するほうが通じます。「この瞬間は二度と来ないのだから、そのように扱う」で意味は伝わります。英語でそのまま ichigo ichie と使う書き手も出てきました。

そのまま使えるフレーズPhrases you can use

  • This meeting will never happen again in quite this way.この集まりは、二度とこの形では起きません。
  • The phrase comes from the tea ceremony.この言葉は茶の湯から来ています。
  • Treat it as the only time.一度きりのものとして扱うのです。
  • It's an instruction, not a sentiment.感傷ではなく、指示なのです。
  • People say it at farewells and graduations.送別会や卒業式でよく使われます。

豆知識Background
