Shoppers browsing a densely organized Japanese value shop.

A hundred-yen shop sells almost everything at a single low price, and the quality surprises visitors.

Hundred-yen shops sell kitchenware, stationery, storage, tools, cosmetics and food at a flat price of one hundred yen plus tax. There are thousands of branches nationwide. What surprises visitors is not the price but the design: items are well made, well thought out, and often solve a problem you did not know had a solution.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

Hundred-yen shops are one of the most rewarding places for a visitor to spend half an hour. Everything costs one hundred yen plus tax, and the range is enormous: kitchen tools, storage boxes, stationery, craft materials, cleaning products, cosmetics, snacks, gardening supplies.

The thing that surprises people is not that it is cheap. It is that the products are properly designed. There are tools for jobs so specific that you would never think to look for them, and they work. The chains employ real product development teams, and new items appear every month.

For a traveler they are useful for another reason: they are where you buy the small practical things that make a trip easier, and they are one of the best places in Japan to buy souvenirs that are actually Japanese rather than made for tourists. Chopsticks, ceramics, stationery and traditional patterned cloth are all there at a hundred yen.

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QIs everything really a hundred yen?

AThe core range is, plus consumption tax, so you pay about one hundred and ten. Larger chains now also carry lines at three hundred, five hundred and above, clearly marked.

QHow is it profitable?

AVolume, large-scale overseas manufacturing, minimal packaging design costs and a rapid product cycle. Margins on individual items are thin and vary, with some products barely breaking even.

QWhat should I buy there as a souvenir?

AChopsticks, small ceramic dishes, stationery, furoshiki-style cloth, and Japanese snacks. They are ordinary domestic products rather than items made for the tourist market.

Phrases you can use

Background
