Goyo osame is the year's last working day; Japan largely closes from December 29th until offices reopen on January 4th.

Government offices close after December 28th and reopen on January 4th, fixed by law, and many companies follow the same pattern. Banks, clinics and many small shops shut for the same days. Planning anything official over the New Year is effectively impossible, which catches visitors off guard.

参As a short speechスピーチ・英作文

The Japanese New Year shutdown is more complete than visitors expect. A law on the closing days of administrative organs makes December 29th to January 3rd holidays for government offices, so the last working day is the 28th, called goyo osame, and the first is the 4th, called goyo hajime, or shigoto hajime in companies.

Most private firms follow the same dates, banks close, most clinics close, and many small restaurants and shops shut for a week or more. What stays open is convenience stores, large shopping centers from the 2nd, and the transport network, with some lines running through the night on New Year's Eve for shrine visits.

The final working day has its own customs: desks are cleaned, the office is tidied, and people greet each other with a set phrase thanking them for the year. On the first working day there is often a short gathering and a New Year greeting from the president, and in many offices very little actual work is done.

御用納めと仕事始めごようおさめとしごとはじめgoyo osamethe last and first working days of the year

In one line

In 30 seconds

As a short speech

Questions people actually ask

QWhat is actually open?

AConvenience stores, some supermarkets, large shopping centers from January 2nd, trains and buses, and emergency medical services. Banks and government offices are closed, and ATMs may have limited hours.

QWhat if I need a doctor?

ALocal governments designate clinics on duty for the period and publish the roster. If your area has an emergency consultation line, call it first; hospitals run reduced services rather than closing entirely.

QShould I avoid traveling then?

ATrains and flights are heavily booked around the 29th to 31st and the 2nd to 4th as people travel to and from family homes. Book reserved seats well in advance or travel on New Year's Day itself, which is quieter.
